Raphus was born in London but grew up in the north-east of England. He has strong ties to Galicia in northwest Spain, where he lived for 20 years. He is now based in Norwich.

He has no formal artistic training: he studied biology and environmental sciences, and went on to work as a scientific translator, and later as a water specialist in international development.

​​​

Art was a central part of his childhood: his maternal grandparents were artists and teachers of art. He has drawn and painted throughout his life, and has been fully dedicated to art since 2022.

​​​

His work focuses almost exclusively on birds, through a visual language that combines elements of expressionism, surrealism and environmental protest art. He is an avid birdwatcher.

He has exhibited at galleries including the Post Room (Norwich), the School House (North Norfolk), the Bank Gallery Summer Exhibition 2024 (Eye, Suffolk), NNEP Wighton 2026, and the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) Annual Exhibition 2026. In 2024, his work was selected for the first edition of art publication "The New Avant Garde" (Delos Publishing).

Raphus is a pseudonym: it's the Latin name of the dodo.
